It is logical to believe, and necessary to hope, that the natural evolutionary journey of the human race is toward greater unity, greater inclusion, and greater sharing of wealth and resources – because without that belief and hope it is terrifying to consider the world we will pass on to future generations.
Based on that belief and hope, it is worth considering why Britain, who considers itself to be one of the more civilised countries in the world, is going in the opposite direction. The only logical answer to that question is that Brexit is driven by ‘national selfishness’.
Selfishness is a natural trait that is innate in every human being. When selfishness reaches critical mass levels in an individual, community, society, or country, then greed quickly follows and once we enter that terrain, then corruption and abuse of power usually occur every time the opportunity presents itself. Selfishness, corruption, abuse of power and greed (SCAG for short) are the root causes of all the problems in our world today – for example poverty, starvation, conflict, war, racial/social/religious discrimination, terrorism, and so on. Even in affluent western democracies there are significant levels of poverty, struggle, violence, crime, and neglect of the vulnerable.
It is important to acknowledge that Brexit is not the only example of this trend toward ‘national selfishness’ in our world today – other examples are Catalonia’s drive for independence, a USA that seems only interested in self, a Scotland striving for independence, a Russia that seems determined to seek world domination, conflict and war in many countries, and so on. Therefore, before it’s too late, it is necessary to understand why this trend seems to be gaining momentum across the world at the present time – and to understand that, we must first understand why selfishness dominates to such an extent in every individual.
The paradigm we embrace at the present time, which is responsible for the way we act and behave as human beings, is underpinned by the present scientific view of reality, which posits that the universe and life are completely physical[1] phenomena. The natural propensity of the physical is toward lower complexity as explained by the second law of thermodynamics and the concept of entropy. Therefore, if life is completely physical in nature, then it is constantly being ‘pulled’ by a natural force toward lower complexity.
In terms of human consciousness, the lowest level of complexity is to offer care and compassion to the ‘self’ only (selfishness). Examples of increasing levels of complexity are to offer care and compassion to family, community, society, country, and eventually to all humanity. However, if life is completely physical in nature, then mind, and consequently human consciousness, are being ‘pulled’ by a natural force toward selfishness. Consequently, selfishness is a fait accompli and Brexit makes absolute sense – and we should get on with living in a world where SCAG dominates and poverty, starvation, conflict, war, and suffering are the order of the day. In this scenario it is fair to say that the present scientific view of reality supports Brexit.
However, any serious analysis of life suggests that it (life) is a composite phenomenon comprising both a physical aspect which is gravitational, and a non-physical[2] aspect which is expansionary. Furthermore, mind and consciousness are expansionary phenomena and therefore it is logical to suggest that they emerge from the non-physical aspect of life rather than from the physical aspect. It is important to acknowledge that the non-physical state is not some imaginary, external, mystical power that will assist us if invoked – rather, it is just as real as the physical and just as important to our existence. For the scientific arguments supporting the above understanding of life, please refer to my paper titled The Grand Interactive Model of Reality.
However, if there is a non-physical aspect to life, then there must also be a non-physical aspect to the universe – because the non-physical aspect of life must have a source. Unfortunately, scientists will not yet consider a non-physical aspect to the universe.
Interestingly, in the 1990s scientists identified an expansionary phenomenon in the universe, to which they have given the name ‘dark energy’. However, they seem to be exploring it based on the science of the physical – and convincing scientists that the non-physical (expansionary) state cannot be understood based on the mathematics of the physical will be extremely difficult. However, when the revamped LHC at CERN fails to find any clues regarding the nature of dark energy, scientists will be forced to go back to the drawing board – at which point they will hopefully acknowledge the non-physical state. This will not be the first-time scientists changed their views.
In ancient times when scientists, with their very basic knowledge and primitive equipment, looked around, everything they saw and understood suggested to them that the earth was flat – and consequently their view of reality at that time was based on the flat earth theory. In modern times, when scientists, with their vast well of knowledge and highly sophisticated equipment, look around, everything they see and understand is physical in nature. Consequently, today’s scientific view of reality is based on the postulate that the universe is completely physical in nature. However, to future generations, our postulate that the universe is completely physical in nature will seem just as ridiculous as the flat earth theory seems to us.
Therefore, scientist will have to take off the blinkers and look at the universe and life as composite phenomena – only then will they understand how the universe, life, mind, and human consciousness interact with each other.
Once we acknowledge and embrace the non-physical aspect of life, we will be equipped with a natural expansionary force/power that will ‘pull’ us toward enlightenment. This will counteract the natural force of the physical pulling us toward selfishness and consequently bring balance to the individual mind – which in turn will gradually seep into the collective consciousness and empower the human race to embrace a new and more enlightened paradigm[3]. Once this new paradigm reaches critical mass levels in our societies and countries, the human race will be on course to build a world of joy and happiness rather than one of poverty, starvation, conflict, war, and suffering.
However, this new paradigm will not emerge until we can teach our children, as a scientific fact, that every individual has a non-physical aspect which is the source of our mind, consciousness, love, compassion, wisdom, and so on.
Science alone has the credibility to bridge all political, cultural, and religious divides and therefore this new paradigm will only emerge when science declares that there is a non-physical aspect to the universe and to life.

[1] Physical (or physical universe) is gravitational in nature, and includes all forms of matter, energy, and momentum, and the physical forces, laws, and constants that govern them.
[2] The non-physical is expansionary in nature and includes everything other than the physical. The non-physical can be viewed as pre-physical or pre-particle – in other words, the state that existed, and still exists, before elementary particles emerged.
